  • Native Restaurant, London, Hospitality

Native Restaurant, London ENQUIRE NOW < Back Overview Hospitality SECTOR: Red Deer ARCHITECT / DESIGNER London LOCATION: Native Restaurant CLIENT: COMPLETION DATE: 2020-10-12 The Brief Engaging the services of Red Deer with a brief of being 'in charge of uniting food and fashion, with a hand crafted edge' Native team's desire to reuse waste materials, champion rising artists, and work with British craftspeople and suppliers. This meant negating mass over production and forging parallels between Native's carbon neutral, less wasteful approach and Red Deer's ethos of championing home grown artisan producers and artists. Due to its reputation as a leading specialist in the design and manufacture of hand crafted artisan mosaic surfaces for commercial and residential projects throughout the UK, Armatile was approached to participate in the project. In keeping with the period of the Grade II listed building dating from 1720 Red Deer wanted to create a bespoke aged mosaic floor telling the story of Browns' and Native's collaboration. Working in partnership with the Armatile design team, Red Deer and Native created sketches of food items that come together to infuse flavour and represent the core values of foraged and low-waste food which are at the heart of the restaurant. These large-scale sketches would form the basis upon which the restaurant's floor mosaics would be based. Creating a unique and beautiful design aesthetic that brought together both the artisanal food and the luxury fashion sold within retailer Browns' Mayfair store. Armatile's on-site design, fabrication, and manufacture facility based in Armagh, Northern Ireland worked to create beautiful hand assembled mosaics. The expert team has a wealth of knowledge in constructing detailed projects for commercial and residential spaces. Using the design sketches provided, the team brought the imagery to life. The finished project brought together the elegant furniture, beautiful colour palate, and luxurious surroundings to create a truly elevated and special dining experience. Providing a space that echoed the creativity and ethos of the restaurant and chefs, while also complementing Brown's luxury fashion in Mayfair. Native Restaurant, London Next Previous

  • Peter Marks Hair Salon, Commercial

Peter Mark Style Club is not just a hair salon, but it is also the Creative Centre which Peter Mark uses as a training hub for all their 72 salons throughout Ireland Winner of "Best use of a tile by an Architect or Designer" in 2009. Peter Marks Hair Salon ENQUIRE NOW < Back Overview Commercial SECTOR: Douglas Wallace ARCHITECT / DESIGNER Dublin LOCATION: Peter Mark Style Club CLIENT: COMPLETION DATE: 2009-09-01 The Brief Peter Mark Style Club is not just a hair salon, but it is also the Creative Centre which Peter Mark uses as a training hub for all their 72 salons, north and south of the border. Style Club is their latest evolution in an industry that has to adapt to constant change. The chic interior must also be functional as the training academy will facilitate up to 800 hairdressers who will work on over 12,000 hours of training in the first year alone. The client, working with top architects Douglas Wallace, wanted the imagery of cut hair on the floor as a catwalk style runner to add to the already funky décor. The idea was that in normal salons the hair is swept off the floor but in this salon the hair is the integral part of the floor. A sample was produced on the architect’s specification and when this was passed the work began on the project. The floor was fitted with a 60x60cm white polished porcelain tile. The hair clipping were subsequently cut out a corresponding black 60x60cm tile. Our waterjet machine was used to cut the exact shapes out of the black tiles and to make the cut outs in the white tiles. The design and style involved in all aspects of the project meant that the floor had to be equally spectacular, and with the TTA Award victory and repeat orders for more Peter Mark salons, that result was achieved. Reopened after a 7 month closure, the new store was to have a market-style aesthetic appeal. The transformation needed to be a complete change, creating a welcoming, upbeat shopping experience for customers. A refreshing and modern take on a British icon. Due to its reputation as a leading specialist in the design and manufacture of hand crafted artisan mosaic surfaces for commercial and residential projects throughout the UK, Armatile was approached to create an entrance that would enhance the storefront and be welcoming to customers, while also using the brand’s iconic colours. A simple, clean, and sophisticated design was created which is automatically identifiable as belonging to the retailer. It pulls classical and luxurious marble into a modern design that is hardwearing and beautiful to look at. Working from our dedicated design and manufacturing facility in Armagh, Northern Ireland, our team produced samples and drawings to bring the vision to life. The final mosaic was crafted using precision waterjet-cut black and white marble and carefully pieced together by hand to form the iconic M&S branding in a seamless circular design. The project was extremely well received by the M&S team, and remains a standout highlight in Armatile’s portfolio. Marks & Spencers Food, Brixton Next Previous

  • Belfast Street Sign, Landscape

Belfast Street Sign ENQUIRE NOW < Back Overview Landscape SECTOR: The Paul Hogarth Company ARCHITECT / DESIGNER Belfast LOCATION: Belfast City Council CLIENT: COMPLETION DATE: 2007-08-01 The Brief Belfast street signs are one of the most iconic and recognisable features throughout the city and beyond. Dating back to their original installation approximately 100 years ago, upkeep of the signs fell under the responsibility of Belfast City Council. However, years of exposure to the elements and vandalism had left some of the signs badly deteriorated. The Urban Development department within Belfast City Council commissioned landscape architects, The Paul Hogarth Company to pursue a solution to reproduce the signs in the same style as the originals. The Paul Hogarth Company reached out to Armatile after learning they offered water cutting technology capable of creating bespoke designs from tiles. The original signs were manufactured using the encaustic method but utilising the high powered water jet cutting technology in Armatile's on-site fabrication and manufacture facility, a modern alternative was able to be offered. After initial discussions, a sample sign was produced that incorporated new design elements, such as incorporating the name of the Quarter/area of Belfast where the sign was located. Belfast's four 'Quarters', Cathedral, Linen, Queens, and Titanic would each be highlighted by name and through an image/logo at the top of the sign. A black polished porcelain tile provided the background material while a white polished porcelain tile was used for the lettering. Further utilising the waterjet cutting technology, the name of the 'Quarter' was etched into the sign with a corresponding logo at the top of the sign. A full replica of an original sign for 'Grace Street' was requested, complete with the moulded edges of the sign. Armatile engaged with specialised tile company who were able to work from detailed architect drawings to reproduce the moulded surround which would complete the signs. In order to preserve the integrity of the signs, the tiles were fixed to a stainless steel backing board. The moulded tiles were all made with a lip so this would not be visible, retaining the aesthetic of the original tiles. The finished project included the supply of approximately 90 ceramic street signs for Belfast City Centre. Working in partnership with The Paul Hogarth Company, Armatile was able to preserve an iconic piece of Belfast's history for many years to come. Creating a beautiful modern reproduction of these classic signs. Belfast Street Sign Next Previous

  • Ballywalter Park, Heritage Restoration

Once a crumbling, inhabitable derelict structure at Ballywalter Park, the restored Georgian Country House on Northern Ireland’s Ard’s Peninsula is now the home of Lord and Lady Dunleath, and a favoured location for TV & film crews. Ballywalter Park ENQUIRE NOW < Back Overview Heritage Restoration SECTOR: Alastair Coey Architects ARCHITECT / DESIGNER Ballywalter Estate LOCATION: Lord and Lady Dunleath CLIENT: COMPLETION DATE: 2009-08-01 The Brief A significant Grade A* listed house built for the present owner's Great, Great, Great Grandfather, Lord Mayor Andrew Mulholland between 1846 and 1850. It was designed of the distinguished artist Sir Charles Lanyon. The picturesque conservatory, also by Lanyon, was added c.1870. The Restoration of Ballywalter Park has been ongoing for many years, having commenced in the late 1950s - early 1960s. In the late 2000s the project to restore of the conservatory at the main house was undertaken. The family wanted to keep as many of the original design features as much as possible. Directly because of Armatile’s surface design expertise and level of understanding in this field of historical restoration it was appointed to work with Contractor HJ O’Boyle on the sympathetic renovation project. Utilising its design expertise and manufacturing capabilities Armatile employed its waterjet cutting capabilities to create radial borders and features for the new floor areas. On site, one of the most significant challenges included preparing the substrate for the installation of the tiles, ensuring the long term integrity and sustainability of the completed project. Images have been added to this project, showing the storyboard of such a historical and delightful building.
