  • Marks & Spencers Food, Brixton, Retail

Marks & Spencers Food, Brixton ENQUIRE NOW < Back Overview Retail SECTOR: Marks and Spencer ARCHITECT / DESIGNER Brixton LOCATION: Marks and Spencer CLIENT: COMPLETION DATE: 2024-10-25 The Brief Marks and Spencer engaged the services of Armatile to design and execute the entrance panel for their new store front in Brixton. Reopened after a 7 month closure, the new store was to have a market-style aesthetic appeal. The transformation needed to be a complete change, creating a welcoming, upbeat shopping experience for customers. A refreshing and modern take on a British icon. Due to its reputation as a leading specialist in the design and manufacture of hand crafted artisan mosaic surfaces for commercial and residential projects throughout the UK, Armatile was approached to create an entrance that would enhance the storefront and be welcoming to customers, while also using the brand’s iconic colours. A simple, clean, and sophisticated design was created which is automatically identifiable as belonging to the retailer. It pulls classical and luxurious marble into a modern design that is hardwearing and beautiful to look at. Working from our dedicated design and manufacturing facility in Armagh, Northern Ireland, our team produced samples and drawings to bring the vision to life. The final mosaic was crafted using precision waterjet-cut black and white marble and carefully pieced together by hand to form the iconic M&S branding in a seamless circular design. The finished result complemented the storefront and surrounding pillars perfectly, reinforcing the high-end, market-hall feel of the new store. The project was extremely well received by the M&S team, and remains a standout highlight in Armatile’s portfolio. Marks & Spencers Food, Brixton Next Previous

  • Belfast Street Sign, Landscape

Belfast Street Sign ENQUIRE NOW < Back Overview Landscape SECTOR: The Paul Hogarth Company ARCHITECT / DESIGNER Belfast LOCATION: Belfast City Council CLIENT: COMPLETION DATE: 2007-08-01 The Brief Belfast street signs are one of the most iconic and recognisable features throughout the city and beyond. Dating back to their original installation approximately 100 years ago, upkeep of the signs fell under the responsibility of Belfast City Council. However, years of exposure to the elements and vandalism had left some of the signs badly deteriorated. The Urban Development department within Belfast City Council commissioned landscape architects, The Paul Hogarth Company to pursue a solution to reproduce the signs in the same style as the originals. The Paul Hogarth Company reached out to Armatile after learning they offered water cutting technology capable of creating bespoke designs from tiles. The original signs were manufactured using the encaustic method but utilising the high powered water jet cutting technology in Armatile's on-site fabrication and manufacture facility, a modern alternative was able to be offered. After initial discussions, a sample sign was produced that incorporated new design elements, such as incorporating the name of the Quarter/area of Belfast where the sign was located. Belfast's four 'Quarters', Cathedral, Linen, Queens, and Titanic would each be highlighted by name and through an image/logo at the top of the sign. A black polished porcelain tile provided the background material while a white polished porcelain tile was used for the lettering. Further utilising the waterjet cutting technology, the name of the 'Quarter' was etched into the sign with a corresponding logo at the top of the sign. A full replica of an original sign for 'Grace Street' was requested, complete with the moulded edges of the sign. Armatile engaged with specialised tile company who were able to work from detailed architect drawings to reproduce the moulded surround which would complete the signs. In order to preserve the integrity of the signs, the tiles were fixed to a stainless steel backing board. The moulded tiles were all made with a lip so this would not be visible, retaining the aesthetic of the original tiles. The finished project included the supply of approximately 90 ceramic street signs for Belfast City Centre. Working in partnership with The Paul Hogarth Company, Armatile was able to preserve an iconic piece of Belfast's history for many years to come. Creating a beautiful modern reproduction of these classic signs. Belfast Street Sign Next Previous

  • Ballywalter Park, Heritage Restoration

Once a crumbling, inhabitable derelict structure at Ballywalter Park, the restored Georgian Country House on Northern Ireland’s Ard’s Peninsula is now the home of Lord and Lady Dunleath, and a favoured location for TV & film crews. Ballywalter Park ENQUIRE NOW < Back Overview Heritage Restoration SECTOR: Alastair Coey Architects ARCHITECT / DESIGNER Ballywalter Estate LOCATION: Lord and Lady Dunleath CLIENT: COMPLETION DATE: 2009-08-01 The Brief A significant Grade A* listed house built for the present owner's Great, Great, Great Grandfather, Lord Mayor Andrew Mulholland between 1846 and 1850. It was designed of the distinguished artist Sir Charles Lanyon. The picturesque conservatory, also by Lanyon, was added c.1870. The Restoration of Ballywalter Park has been ongoing for many years, having commenced in the late 1950s - early 1960s. In the late 2000s the project to restore of the conservatory at the main house was undertaken. The family wanted to keep as many of the original design features as much as possible. Directly because of Armatile’s surface design expertise and level of understanding in this field of historical restoration it was appointed to work with Contractor HJ O’Boyle on the sympathetic renovation project. Utilising its design expertise and manufacturing capabilities Armatile employed its waterjet cutting capabilities to create radial borders and features for the new floor areas. On site, one of the most significant challenges included preparing the substrate for the installation of the tiles, ensuring the long term integrity and sustainability of the completed project. Images have been added to this project, showing the storyboard of such a historical and delightful building. You can see from our before and after pictures that a lot of work was undertook by Armatile. Ballywalter Park Next Previous

  • Lina Stores, Hospitality

Armatile create hand assembled, traditional style mosaic features to specification for projects. Here is an example of one we recently manufactured with an inlaid logo detail for the entrance of Lina Stores on Greek Street in London. Lina Stores ENQUIRE NOW < Back Overview Hospitality SECTOR: Red Deer Architects ARCHITECT / DESIGNER Greek Street, London LOCATION: Lina Stores CLIENT: COMPLETION DATE: 2018-06-20 The Brief We were contacted by design experts Red Deer Architects to draw, cut and hand assemble a design feature (using cararra and nero marquina marbles laid in a traditional mosaic style) that would make an immediate impact on visitors. Architect Lionel Real de Azúa explained that the original Lina Stores opened in 1944 and Red Deer was seeking to create visual cues with the original deli that could be brought over to the new restaurant on Greek Street. Drawing inspiration from the Art Deco cafes and European bistros a traditionally inspired mosaic floor to greet the guests was an essential element of the new restaurant design. The Armatile Fabrication Team in our factory in Armagh initially cut thousands of pieces of 15mm marble cubes before our artisan Hand Assembly Team placed each piece in the design. We utilised our in-house waterjet cutting technology to precision cut the logo detail within the mosaic runner feature. The entire mosaic was created on interlocking mesh-backed panels that significantly reduced fitting time and costs on site. The finished product looks stunning and certainly establishes the interior themes to visitors on arrival. Is our bespoke mosaic fabrication service something you need for your project? Forward your ideas, theme etc to design@armatile.com and get the conversation started! Lina Stores Next Previous

  • Casa Ceramic - Illusion, Retail

Our Design and Manufacturing teams have the expertise and passion to push the boundaries, creating inspiring surfaces tailor-made to suit individual need and unique design challenges. The show-stopping entrance to Casa Ceramica's designer tile showroom in Manchester certainly put this to the test. Casa Ceramic - Illusion ENQUIRE NOW < Back Overview Retail SECTOR: with Armatile ARCHITECT / DESIGNER Manchester LOCATION: Casa Ceramica CLIENT: COMPLETION DATE: 2017-08-17 The Brief Over the past number of years, images of this amazing optical illusion floor have gone viral across several social media platforms. We are proud to say we manufactured this floor to realise our client’s vision. It is the entrance to the showroom of Manchester designer tile company Casa Ceramica. It is a perfectly flat floor and has been designed and manufactured (using waterjet cutting) to create the illusion of flowing movement. When developing their new showroom the Casa Ceramic Team wanted to have a show-stopping entrance that would push the boundaries show off what could actually be achieved with tiles. -The Design Process With an original theme of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ they approached Armatile to help; they were aware of our in house design team and specialist manufacturing capability. Our team produced some initial concept drawings and worked closely with the client to successfully design a floor that produces an optical illusion that looks like it is rolling and sinking. But don’t worry it is perfectly safe. -The Manufacturing Process Using extremely hard wearing, slip resistant tiles (PTV+36) our manufacturing team waterjet cut every single piece of this floor into a particular shape to fit the design. They were all then dry laid on our factory floor to ensure everything fitted, before being labelled, packaged and shipped to site for installation. -The Installation Process When the tiles arrived at Casa ceramic the installation was helped greatly by the fact each piece was numbered. Working to the numbered drawing that accompanied the order, the entire entrance floor was installed in under nine hours (spread over 4 days to minimise impact on customers). -Bespoke Surfaces The dedication, skill and technical knowledge of Armatile’s team is integral part of its offering and ability to consistently delivering high quality bespoke tile surfaces for clients’ projects. • Stormont Castle Greenhouse, Restoration/Conservation

The historic Grade B1 Listed Glasshouse on the grounds of Stormont Castle in Belfast. Armatile specialise in breathing new life into important historic buildings by manufacturing new Victorian style period flooring that maintains the aesthetic of the original architect's design Stormont Castle Greenhouse ENQUIRE NOW < Back Overview Restoration/Conservation SECTOR: ARCHITECT / DESIGNER Belfast LOCATION: DF&PNI CLIENT: COMPLETION DATE: 2009-09-09 The Brief The historic Grade B1 Listed Glasshouse on the grounds of Stormont Castle in Belfast was restored in the 2008-2009 in conjunction with the Dept of Finance & Personnel and lead contractor H&J Martin. The Glasshouse is situated in the West Gardens of Stormont Estate and is a prominent lean-to structure adjacent to the row of Grade A Listed workers cottages. In the late 1990s a survey of the Glasshouse found parts of it were in danger of collapse. The restoration project aimed to maintain its Victorian origins while bringing the facility up to date with state of the art equipment and furnishing needed to create a well-equipped meeting venue and function room. Due to its experience and sympathetic approach to working on the restoration of old building Armatile were appointed to manufacture and installed a beautiful Victorian style tile floor. One of the biggest challenges in this project was the position of access panels for services that ran directly up the centre of the floor and the heating channels on the sides. In an inspired move Armatile’s team designed the entire floor around the shape and size of the access panels. Its skilled team manufactured the design in its factory in Armagh with the specific purpose of ‘hiding’ the panels in plain sight. Using in-house waterjet and industrial tile cutting machinery our factory team cut the individual pieces needed to size, before our artisan mosaic team hand assembled them all on mesh-backed panels for ease of fitting on site. The modular Victorian design now seamlessly integrates the steel frames and latches of the access panels and creates an attractive, bright space for meetings and presentations.
