Why Porcelain Outdoor Paving?

Engineered for the outdoors

Porcelain outdoor paving has become the material of choice for homeowners, landscapers and builders across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Unlike natural stone or concrete slabs, porcelain paving is non-porous, meaning it won't absorb water, stain or crack through freeze-thaw cycles.

Our 20mm exterior porcelain tiles are available in a wide range of styles including natural stone effect, wood effect, slate effect and concrete effect. You get the look of premium natural materials with none of the upkeep.

Whether you're designing a patio in Belfast, a garden terrace in Dublin, an outdoor space in Cork, Galway or Limerick, or a poolside area in Armagh or Newry, our specialists will help you find the right paving for your project.

Dark and Slate Tones for Patios

Lighter stone and buff tones dominated outdoor spaces for years, but darker slate, charcoal and anthracite porcelain paving is becoming increasingly popular for patios and garden terraces across Ireland. Dark tones absorb heat well, show less everyday marking and create a striking contrast against green planting and timber garden furniture. Combined with good lighting, a dark porcelain patio can look genuinely dramatic after dark.

Porcelain Replacing Natural Stone

Natural stone has long been the go-to for premium outdoor spaces, but porcelain paving is now the more popular choice across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Porcelain requires no sealing, does not absorb moss or algae the way natural stone does and holds its appearance far better in the wet Irish climate. Modern porcelain stone effect tiles are now so convincing that the practical benefits come with no visual compromise.

Seamless Indoor to Outdoor Flow

More homeowners are choosing the same tile, or a closely complementary one, for both the interior floor and the outdoor patio or terrace. When the floor runs from the kitchen or living room straight out through bifold or sliding doors to the outdoor space, it visually extends the room and makes both spaces feel bigger. Achieving this requires careful matching of tone, format and finish across indoor and outdoor ranges, something our showroom teams help customers navigate every day.

Large Format Paving Taking Over

The shift to large format outdoor tiles is one of the most consistent trends we see across Ireland and Northern Ireland. 60x60cm and 90x60cm porcelain slabs create fewer joints and give outdoor spaces a cleaner, more contemporary finish. They work particularly well in modern new builds and garden renovations where the outdoor space is treated as an extension of the interior rather than an afterthought.

FAQS

Common questions about outdoor tiles

Armatile supplies premium outdoor porcelain tiles and paving to homeowners, architects and contractors across Ireland and Northern Ireland. With showrooms in Dublin, Belfast, Armagh and Newry, we are one of the most trusted outdoor tile suppliers on the island of Ireland.

  • Yes. Standard indoor tiles are not suitable for outdoor use. Outdoor porcelain tiles need to be frost resistant, slip rated and thick enough to handle ground movement. We recommend 20mm porcelain pavers for all outdoor areas in Ireland. Using indoor tiles outdoors will risks cracking over winter.

  • For patios, terraces and garden paths in Ireland, 20mm is the standard and recommended thickness. It can be laid on a mortar bed, a gravel and sand base, or on adjustable pedestals for raised decking areas. For driveways or areas with vehicular access, confirm the load rating with our team before ordering.

  • Our outdoor tile range is specifically selected for slip resistance in wet conditions. All outdoor tiles carry a PTV rating. PTV+36 is suitable for most patios and garden areas. We always advise on the right rating for your specific project when you visit our showrooms or book a consultation.

  • Outdoor porcelain tiles are very easy to maintain. A regular sweep to remove debris followed by an occasional pressure wash is all that is needed to keep them looking their best. For stubborn stains like moss or algae, a porcelain-safe cleaning solution works well. Avoid bleach-based products as these can affect the grout over time. We stock a range of cleaning supplies in our showrooms, so ask our team for more details and they will point you in the right direction.

  • We recommend a minimum of 15% waste allowance for outdoor areas, and up to 20% if your space has curves, steps or complex cuts. Outdoor cuts are harder to redo once laid, so it is always better to over-order slightly. Ask in store for our returns policy on unused full boxes.
