St Comgall’s Parish Church is an historic building constructed in 1889. It takes its name from the founder of Bangor Abbey which is situated just a few hundred metres away and originally built around 555AD. St Comgall's Parish Church ENQUIRE NOW < Back Overview Churches and Restoration SECTOR: Mclean & Forte Partnership ARCHITECT / DESIGNER Bangor, Co Down LOCATION: St Comgall's Parish Church CLIENT: COMPLETION DATE: 2019-12-11 The Brief The Architect’s creative vision for the centre aisle was to take visitors on a journey across Europe, highlighting the areas visited by St Comgall while highlighting his origins in Bangor, Co Down. Working to the Architects designs Armatile’s in-house design team drew up detailed fabrication drawings for the client’s approval and itemised each individual piece required to be ordered from the manufacturer for the project. Within each section of the aisle there are 54 individual waterjet cut pieces that are fitted together to create an ornate Celtic weave linking one part of St Comgall’s Mission from Bangor, through Europe where he established monasteries in countries such as France, Switzerland and Italy. Our manufacturing team based in our factory in Armagh then used high powered waterjet cutting machinery to cut the base tiles into all the individual shapes before delicately hand assembling each piece in the intricate designs and panels before despatching them to site. Style Club is their latest evolution in an industry that has to adapt to constant change. The chic interior must also be functional as the training academy will facilitate up to 800 hairdressers who will work on over 12,000 hours of training in the first year alone. The client, working with top architects Douglas Wallace, wanted the imagery of cut hair on the floor as a catwalk style runner to add to the already funky décor. The idea was that in normal salons the hair is swept off the floor but in this salon the hair is the integral part of the floor. A sample was produced on the architect’s specification and when this was passed the work began on the project. The floor was fitted with a 60x60cm white polished porcelain tile. The hair clipping were subsequently cut out a corresponding black 60x60cm tile. Our waterjet machine was used to cut the exact shapes out of the black tiles and to make the cut outs in the white tiles. The design and style involved in all aspects of the project meant that the floor had to be equally spectacular, and with the TTA Award victory and repeat orders for more Peter Mark salons, that result was achieved. Belfast Street Sign ENQUIRE NOW < Back Overview Landscape SECTOR: The Paul Hogarth Company ARCHITECT / DESIGNER Belfast LOCATION: Belfast City Council CLIENT: COMPLETION DATE: 2007-08-01 The Brief Belfast street signs are one of the most iconic and recognisable features throughout the city and beyond. Dating back to their original installation approximately 100 years ago, upkeep of the signs fell under the responsibility of Belfast City Council. However, years of exposure to the elements and vandalism had left some of the signs badly deteriorated. The Urban Development department within Belfast City Council commissioned landscape architects, The Paul Hogarth Company to pursue a solution to reproduce the signs in the same style as the originals. The Paul Hogarth Company reached out to Armatile after learning they offered water cutting technology capable of creating bespoke designs from tiles. The original signs were manufactured using the encaustic method but utilising the high powered water jet cutting technology in Armatile's on-site fabrication and manufacture facility, a modern alternative was able to be offered. After initial discussions, a sample sign was produced that incorporated new design elements, such as incorporating the name of the Quarter/area of Belfast where the sign was located. Belfast's four 'Quarters', Cathedral, Linen, Queens, and Titanic would each be highlighted by name and through an image/logo at the top of the sign. A black polished porcelain tile provided the background material while a white polished porcelain tile was used for the lettering. Further utilising the waterjet cutting technology, the name of the 'Quarter' was etched into the sign with a corresponding logo at the top of the sign. A full replica of an original sign for 'Grace Street' was requested, complete with the moulded edges of the sign. Armatile engaged with specialised tile company who were able to work from detailed architect drawings to reproduce the moulded surround which would complete the signs. In order to preserve the integrity of the signs, the tiles were fixed to a stainless steel backing board. The moulded tiles were all made with a lip so this would not be visible, retaining the aesthetic of the original tiles. The finished project included the supply of approximately 90 ceramic street signs for Belfast City Centre. Working in partnership with The Paul Hogarth Company, Armatile was able to preserve an iconic piece of Belfast's history for many years to come. Armatile designed and manufactured a high quality Victorian style period flooring for the restoration of the Grade II Listed Coombe Cliff Conservatory at The Horniman Museum in London within a tight budget. Horniman Museum & Gardens ENQUIRE NOW < Back Overview Conservation and Restoration SECTOR: Donald Insall Associates ARCHITECT / DESIGNER Coombe Cliff Conservatory LOCATION: Abbeymead Builders CLIENT: COMPLETION DATE: 2017-03-23 The Brief The Grade II Listed Coombe Cliff Conservatory is considered a pioneering example of architectural cast ironwork in its day. Due to neglect and eventually fire damage in 1977, it was dismantled and left as component parts at Crystal Palace Park. In the 1980s, English Heritage funded the rebuilding of the Conservatory at its current location on the Horniman Museum’s 16 acre site in Forest Hill. The aging structure was in need of essential conservation and restoration work for it to continue to be an integral part of the museum and usable by the visiting public. The brief was to ensure the restoration retained and reinforced the historic aesthetic of the conservatory. This included replacing the existing quarry tile with a geometric patterned polychromatic tiles inspired by Victorian design to highlight and celebrate the era in which the both the conservatory and museum where originally built. One of the main project challenges was to create a tile solution in a Victorian inspired geometric pattern that could cost effectively be designed, manufactured and installed within a tight budget, and a timescale that minimised the disruption to the Museum and its visitors. This project is a great example of how Armatile works in partnership with all project stakeholders, including the client, contractor and installer to provide a tailored tile solutions for heritage restoration projects. Armatile’s Contract’s Team completed the tiling of the new Car Showroom, Offices and Workshop at Jaguar Landover for Donnelly Brothers Group in Dungannon. The tiling work at the contemporary new showroom took three months to complete and looks absolutely stunning. The workshop was fitted with highly slip resistant tiles for provide support underfoot in all type of conditions. The showroom, meeting areas and offices were fitted with larger format tiles that deliver the Jaguar Landrover design scheme that showcases the luxurious car brands to its customers. Group executive chairman Terence Donnelly, who is the son of founder Peter Donnelly, said: "Flooded with natural light and luxurious decor, the showroom provides a comfortable space for both our employees and our customers, who can relax in the lounge area which is complete with a coffee bar and wi-fi."
