Why September is the Best Time to Start a Tiling Project

Most people put off home projects until January. New year, fresh start. We understand the logic.

Not a full renovation. Just one room, one surface, one thing you have been meaning to sort for a while.

Here is why now is the right moment.

The trades are easier to book

Summer can be one of the busier periods for tilers across Ireland and Northern Ireland, with many homeowners aiming to get projects finished between June and August, which means lead times stretch out and good tradespeople get booked solid.

By September, that pressure eases.

As summer projects begin to wrap up, availability can start to improve, making September a useful time to get quotes and secure a date. If you have been putting something off because it felt like too much hassle to organise, September is a much easier time to actually get someone in.

A splashback, a bathroom floor or a hallway is a manageable job, typically one or two days' work for an experienced tiler. Small enough to fit around life. Big enough to make you wonder why you waited.

If you want underfloor heating, now is the time

This one matters more than people realise.

Underfloor heating under a tiled floor is one of the most satisfying small upgrades you can make in an Irish home. Porcelain tiles conduct and retain heat beautifully, and a warm tiled bathroom floor on a cold October morning is a genuinely different experience to cold vinyl or a bath mat you keep moving around.

But the installation needs time. The system needs to be laid, the adhesive and tiles need to cure properly, and the floor needs to be commissioned before you start running it at full temperature. If you want it working before the cold weather properly arrives, you need to be starting the project now rather than in October.

The conversations we have in September tend to be more thorough and more useful than the ones we have in November when everyone is trying to get something finished before Christmas.

Here is the practical reality: tile orders placed in November and December can face longer delivery times as suppliers manage end-of-year demand. If you are hoping to have even a small project finished before Christmas, a new bathroom floor, a fresh splashback, a retiled hallway, you need to be choosing tiles in September and ordering in October.

That timeline sounds comfortable right now. It does not feel that way in November.

Most people choose tiles in summer light, then live with them in winter light. September is a useful middle ground the light is shifting, the evenings are coming in, and you start to get a feel for how a room actually behaves for most of the year.

A cool grey tile that looked fresh and clean in a July showroom can feel cold in October. A warm stone effect that seemed almost too yellow in summer can look exactly right once the season turns. Viewing your tile samples in your home in September will give you a much more honest read on how they will feel day to day.
